Brand Story: Lifted

Overview

Lifted is a student engagement initiative I developed for St. Michael's & All Angels Episcopal Church in Longview, Texas. After identifying a significant gap in programming for middle and high school students, I designed and launched a ministry focused on increasing engagement, fostering community, and creating meaningful connections between teenagers and the broader church congregation.

What began with just two students has grown into a thriving weekly program that regularly serves four to six participants while strengthening relationships across multiple generations within the church. More importantly, it has transformed students from passive attendees into active participants with a genuine sense of belonging.

The Inspiration

Successful organizations continually evaluate whether every audience they serve feels seen, valued, and engaged.

As my daughter entered middle school, I became increasingly aware that our church offered excellent programming for children and adults, yet there was little intentionally designed for teenagers. Many students attended church simply because their families did, but they lacked meaningful opportunities to build relationships, discuss their faith, or develop ownership within the church community.

Recognizing this gap, I felt called to create a program specifically designed around the needs, interests, and communication preferences of today's teenagers. Rather than adapting an existing curriculum, I built the experience from the ground up with the goal of creating an environment where students would genuinely want to return each week.

My Role

I developed and continue to oversee every aspect of the Lifted ministry, including:

  • In addition to leading weekly gatherings, I manage ongoing communication through group messaging, custom-designed graphics, and weekly touchpoints that encourage conversation, strengthen relationships, and keep students connected throughout the week.

Engagement Strategy

From the beginning, Lifted was intentionally designed around the student experience.

Each gathering follows a simple, repeatable framework consisting of a twelve-minute video, guided discussion, prayer requests, and a closing prayer. Keeping the teaching concise allows students to spend more time engaging in authentic conversation while reducing barriers to participation.

Equally important was designing an environment that students would associate with comfort, creativity, and belonging.

I refreshed the meeting space with comfortable seating, bean bags, seasonal décor, Scripture-based coloring pages, and creative hospitality elements such as themed snack stations and seasonal treats. These intentional details communicate that students are valued and that the experience was thoughtfully prepared specifically for them.

Outside of Sunday mornings, Lifted continues through strategically planned communication touchpoints. Weekly graphics, encouraging text messages, and ongoing conversations help bridge the gap between meetings while reinforcing relationships and creating consistency throughout the week.

Together, these elements create a cohesive experience that extends far beyond a single weekly gathering.

Outcomes & Impact

One of the most rewarding outcomes has been watching students become increasingly connected—not only to one another, but also to the larger church community.

Students who once attended quietly alongside their families now recognize one another throughout church, participate in conversations with adults, volunteer in church life, and actively support one another through prayer and encouragement.

As participation and trust increased, discussions naturally became longer and more meaningful than originally planned. The positive culture surrounding the ministry has generated curiosity among adults within the congregation, many of whom have expressed interest in the conversations and community developing within the group.

One particularly meaningful milestone came when a graduating senior requested that Lifted continue meeting throughout the summer before leaving for college. Rather than taking our planned summer break, we adjusted the ministry schedule around his availability. That request affirmed something I had hoped to create from the beginning: not simply attendance, but genuine investment and community ownership.

What I Learned

Creating Lifted reinforced an important principle that extends well beyond ministry:

People engage with organizations when they feel personally connected to the experience.

Programming alone rarely builds community. Consistent communication, thoughtful hospitality, intentional branding, and meaningful relationships work together to create environments where people feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to participate.

Whether serving customers, students, employees, or church members, engagement grows when organizations invest in authentic relationships instead of one-time interactions.

Reflection

Every meaningful relationship begins with a touchpoint.

Lifted taught me that successful engagement is rarely the result of one great event. Instead, it is built through intentional, consistent communication that bridges the gap between people and creates opportunities for trust to develop over time.

By combining thoughtful experience design, ongoing communication, visual consistency, and genuine hospitality, Lifted has helped transform a group of isolated teenagers into an engaged community that now participates more fully in the life of the church. Watching students connect across generations, take greater ownership of their faith, and become active contributors to the church has been the clearest measure of success.
